The game features a large open-world environment that allows players to explore freely. The game allows the player to take on the role of a criminal in any of these cities, with the objective of rising through the ranks of organized crime. Grand Theft Auto is set in three fictional cities: Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas. CJ must travel across the state to get revenge on those responsible while dealing with corrupt government officials. The single-player story follows a young man named Carl Johnson, who returns home after five years in exile and discovers his family has been murdered. The game is set in the fictional state of San Andreas, based in Southern California. It was later re-released on iOS, Android, Fire OS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows Phone platforms. The game was first released for the PlayStation in 1997, later ported to Microsoft Windows and the Game Boy Color.
